IONITY Expands UK High Power Network


A joint venture between Daimler, Ford, BMW and the Volkswagen Group with Audi and Porsche, IONITY announces that it will expand its UK network with a High Power Charging station in Milton Keynes.

IONITY expands its UK charge network with the launch of a new station in Milton Keynes.Drivers can now charge their electric cars in less than 20 minutes using renewable energy from IONITY’s High Power Chargers at Milton Keynes Coachway. IONITY is a joint venture between Daimler, Ford, BMW and the Volkswagen Group with Audi and Porsche. It aims to increase the feasibility and adoption of EVs by establishing convenient High Power Charging (HPC) sites across the continent. Milton Keynes is the second station in the UK, with a third soon to follow in Gretna Green.

Joined by the Mayor of Milton Keynes, Cllr. Sam Crooks, the opening ceremony marked a significant step toward the future of mobility in the city. As the UK home of Volkswagen Group, BMW and Daimler, the new station is also an important and symbolic location for the IONITY network. With the latest generation of electric vehicles providing much-improved performance, efficiency and comfort, the new network will ease range anxiety for existing and potential EV owners.

IONITY Network

IONITY’s network will establish 2400 chargers across Europe by 2020, enabling hassle-free Pan-European EV travel. With ultra-fast charging times and the selection of convenient motorway locations, IONITY’s network will make long distance journeys far more viable than much slower 50kW alternatives. The 350kW UK charging network is future-proofed, delivering infrastructure capable of charging times as low as 8 minutes, making e-mobility a convenient, reliable and everyday experience.

For all of its UK stations, IONITY’s High Power Chargers will provide every charge point with 100% renewable energy.  This greatly reduces the environmental impact of a journey and providing peace of mind for environmentally conscious drivers.

IONITY are based in Munich and were founded in 2017; it is a joint venture of the BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company and the Volkswagen Group. In addition to this, IONITY’s goal is to build an extensive and reliable 350 kW High-Power-Charging network (HPC) for electric vehicles in Europe. About IONITY’s High-Power Charging network

IONITY’s charging technology is able to directly convert AC power to DC via industrially-robust electronics. This is before transmitting it straight into a vehicle’s battery at full velocity. Furthermore, each charge point offers the potential of up to 350 kW. However, smart logic inside the charger means all EVs equipped with CCS will automatically charge at the fastest rate their batteries can safely handle. Finally, a vehicle capable of the full 350 kW charging power can be ready in approx. 10-15 minutes, significantly faster than it takes at more common 50 kW charging stations as of today. This is three times quicker than current fast chargers. Additionally, all vehicles using the Combined Charging System (CCS). Consequently, this is the most widely available EV charging standard in Europe and compatible with the network.
